Title: Community Eligibility Provision: Legislation and Food Access in Schools<\/h3>

Topic:<\/strong> Operational Integrity – Legal<\/p>

Audience:<\/strong> Board members, Business managers, Instructional leaders, Operations leaders<\/p>

The School Meals for All Bill in California (AB 130) will require charters serving breakfast and lunch with an Identified Student Percentage (ISP) at or over 40% to enroll in a provision. This transition to being a provision school does require a lot of pre-work and planning. Presenters will talk about their charters’ story, the steps they took in considering and implementing CEP, and helping the participants prepare for upcoming election deadline.<\/p>

In this interactive session, participants will learn how federal and state legislation surrounding universal meals and provisions will change the way school nutrition operates and what that means for students and families. Charters will have the opportunity to take advantage of Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), receive state payment benefits, and pass on additional benefits to their students. We will examine the CEP timeline, support tools, and next steps after the transition to CEP.<\/p>

Frances Montoya is the Director of Food Service for Vaughn Next Century Learning Center. Vaughn is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District, operating five campuses under one charter and currently serving just over 3,000 K-12 students. Vaughn has operated the Community Eligibility Provision schoolwide since SY 20-21. Jonelle Williams- Pagan is a graduate of Spelman College and currently a Program Manager for Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit. Through its No Kid Hungry campaign, Share Our Strength focuses on finding solutions to end childhood hunger in the United States. Previously, Jonelle worked in various operational roles at McGraw Hill Education and Rocket Learning for ten years to ensure students in disadvantaged communities had equal access to supplemental education and resources.
