Their support in implementing the breakfast in the classroom program helps ensure students receive the nourishment they need both physically and mentally for overall success.\u201d &#8211; Adriane Robles, SBCUSD director of nutrition services<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Principals across California and the United States understand that ensuring kids have three meals a day is essential to their health, well-being and ability to learn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of National Principals Appreciation Month, we\u2019re uplifting innovative school leaders who have championed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/california\/school-breakfast\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">breakfast after the bell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> programs in their school so every student can start the day ready to learn with a nutritious meal. Prior to the breakfast in the classroom program, nutrition services were serving an average of 150 meals in the traditional setting. Principal McIntosh knew this was an opportunity to ensure more scholars had a meal to start the day.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With 23 years as an educator in the district and serving as Bing Wong principal for the last seven years, McIntosh understands how the barriers facing her families like transportation, high cost of living, and inconsistencies in jobs and housing can affect their scholars\u2019 ability to access nutrition and learn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since launching the program, students across all grade levels have taken ownership of it. \u201cTo see them problem-solve, persevere and support one another, determined to get the bags of meals to their classrooms is just beautiful,\u201d said Principal McIntosh.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBreakfast in the classroom presented an opportunity for us to guarantee two meals a day for our scholars. Inspired by her own children, she works hard to ensure her scholars have the same opportunities and a strong foundation to become responsible and engaged adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Gordon wants to remove barriers for her students by providing equitable access to a quality education. She believes that starts with a full stomach and an energized brain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI will always do my best to think outside the box to create opportunities for all students to have equitable access to a rigorous education,\u201d said Dr. Gordon.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt takes perseverance and an innovative approach to establish systems and procedures when starting something new,\u201d said Dr. Gordon. \u201cMost importantly, it takes a great team of teachers and staff to make a greater impact on student learning through removing barriers such as hunger. Let\u2019s worry about our scholars having their basic needs met and being able to thrive, grow, learn and succeed.\u201d<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-66 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7c120d4\" data-id=\"7c120d4\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41ca050 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"41ca050\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><b>Principal Tamika Casey, Cole Elementary<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Being an educator has been a lifelong dream since she was a child, and now with nearly 30 years in education, Principal Casey\u2019s mission has remained the same, to ensure every child achieves academically, socially and emotionally in order to be successful in their future.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHaving their basic needs of being fed first thing in the morning has impacted their readiness to learn,\u201d said Principal Casey. \u201cOur scholars love the sense of responsibility of transporting the meals to and from their classrooms. They are also able to express themselves a bit more, because our teachers use this time for their social and emotional learning check-ins. As they have breakfast, they\u2019re able to talk to each other about how they\u2019re feeling and what they need to be successful for the day. Breakfast in the classroom has changed the vibe of the school.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With less \u2018hangry\u2019 kids, Principal Casey hopes that more schools will get on board and see the value in the program for their scholars. \u201cI want our community to be a thriving community. Driven by a hope for all of her students to meet their fullest academic potential, where they feel seen, heard, valued and loved, Principal York knew it was important to support breakfast in the classroom at Jefferson Hunt Elementary.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAll students deserve to show up each day with the same access as their peers in neighboring cities,\u201d said Principal York. \u201cThis includes access to the most basic of needs including food.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since launching the program, students have shared that breakfast is their favorite time of day.
