And for children who rely on free meals at school, summer can be the hungriest time of year.<\/p><p>Now, thanks in part to the work of No Kid Hungry and other advocates, there\u2019s a federal program to help families buy food during the summer called Summer EBT. Known as SUN Bucks in California,\u00a0many children will get and receive SUN Bucks benefits automatically, but some families will need to apply to receive benefits. SUN Bucks works just like CalFresh, but for the summer.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SUN Bucks is a new permanent program that helps families with school-age children buy groceries during the summer when kids might not have access to school meals. Children and families can participate in both SUN Bucks and summer meals, as well as other benefit programs like CalFresh and Medi-Cal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For summer 2024, the state will automatically enroll about 5 million eligible children based on existing school and social services data.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SUN Bucks works like CalFresh and looks like the Golden State Advantage card.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You must use your SUN Bucks within 122 days of funds being loaded and on the card. Expired benefits cannot be replaced or put back on your card. You do not have to pay SUN Bucks back.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8b7d62c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8b7d62c\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a5cd4de\" data-id=\"a5cd4de\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a758031 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"a758031\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ceb2059 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ceb2059\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><b>Who is Eligible?<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eligible children will automatically get SUN Bucks if:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They are age 6 \u2013 18 years and get CalFresh, CalWORKS, or Medi-Cal; <\/span><b>OR<\/b><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They are age 0 \u2013 22 years, attending schools that are part of <\/span><b>National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and\/or School Breakfast Programs (SBP), AND are approved for free or reduced price meals.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Check with your child\u2019s school to make sure your free or reduced-price school meal application or Alternative Income Form is on file.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If children who are already determined eligible for free or reduced-price meals for the 2024 school year, no action is needed. Children who are attending Head Start, experiencing homelessness, living in foster care or part of a migrant family are also automatically eligible.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To check if your children are eligible, ask your child\u2019s school for a school meal application or an Alternative Income Form. Complete the form and return it to the school. You do not need to fill out an application. You will get one new SUN Bucks card for each eligible child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most families will begin receiving their 2024 SUN Bucks cards in mid-June through August. Due to the large volume of automatically eligible children (nearly 5 million), issuances will occur in two stages:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stage 1: Automatically enrolled kids will begin receiving their cards mid-June and continuing through August. Cards will be mailed in alphabetical order by the child\u2019s last name (A-Z).<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Estimated Card Delivery by Month &amp; Last Name for Automatically Enrolled Kids<\/span><\/p><table style=\"height: 225px\" width=\"543\"><tbody><tr><td><p><b>Month<\/b><\/p><\/td><td><p><b>Last Name Starting Letter<\/b><\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mid-June<\/span><\/p><\/td><td><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A &#8211; D<\/span><\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">July<\/span><\/p><\/td><td><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">E &#8211; L<\/span><\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">August<\/span><\/p><\/td><td><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">M &#8211; Z\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stage 2: Kids will get their cards in Stage 2 if they were: (1) not automatically enrolled in Stage 1, and (2) determined eligible after the start of Stage 1. their children with California SUN Bucks, also called Summer-EBT. SUN Bucks works just like CalFresh, but for the summer.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Simply, children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through a school meal application or an Alternative Income Form, or get CalFresh, CalWORKS, or Medi-Cal, are automatically enrolled. SUN Bucks provides $40 per month for food for June, July and August 2024 ($120 total).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SUN Bucks is a new permanent program that helps families with school-age children buy groceries during the summer when kids might not have access to school meals. Children and families can participate in both SUN Bucks and summer meals, as well as other benefit programs like CalFresh and Medi-Cal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many children will get and receive SUN Bucks benefits automatically, but some families will need to verify their income to receive benefits.
