Nurseries, avocado farms and citrus groves surround the small Vallecitos School District whose enrollment is only 190 students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In San Diego County, the high cost of living is a significant contributor to hunger and poverty. This issue is often compounded by unexpected financial hardships, which place additional strain on household budgets, especially during school breaks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vallecitos School District plays a pivotal role by providing essential educational and nutritional services to its students. Their summer non-congregate meal program, led by Dorothy Davis, director of child nutrition services, is an especially critical resource for youth in their rural community.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]To ensure that all students are nourished every day, the district implemented two programs:\u00a0 <\/span>Second Chance Breakfast<\/span><\/a> during the school year, and the non-congregate feeding program during the summer. The latter initiative, now in its second year, provides seven days\u2019 worth of breakfast and lunch.
