For many children across Florida, summer can bring more than just a break from school\u2014it sometimes also brings uncertainty about where their next meal will come from. During the school year, millions of children rely on school breakfast and lunch as a dependable source of nutrition. But when school lets out for the summer, those meals can be harder to get, making <\/span>summer the hungriest time of the year for kids<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully, families across Florida can turn to <\/span>Summer BreakSpot<\/b>, a program run by the <\/span>Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS)<\/b>, which provides free meals to kids 18 and under at thousands of local sites\u2014like schools, libraries, parks, and community centers.<\/span><\/p>\n

At almost all sites, there is no application necessary and any child 18 or younger can simply come during mealtimes to receive a meal.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, even with thousands of local sites, we know that not every family can easily get to one. Transportation challenges, rural geography, and caregiver schedules can all create barriers. That\u2019s why <\/span>No Kid Hungry Florida is working hard to support efforts to bring summer meals to kids in flexible ways that meet families where they are<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In certain eligible rural communities, families can access \u201cgrab-and-go\u201d style programs that don\u2019t require children to eat on-site. In some cases, caregivers are even able to pick up multiple days\u2019 worth of meals at once, helping to reduce the burden of daily travel and ensure kids have the nutrition they need all week long.<\/span><\/p>\n

No Kid Hungry Florida is proud to support these efforts by providing funding, technical assistance, and resources to local partners working to bring these programs to their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n
