No Kid Hungry Georgia and School Nutrition Director Teena Carr are privileged to recognize Derick Austin, the dedicated Superintendent of Putnam County, with an extra shout-out for his unwavering commitment to our community. In Teena Carr’s words, “His impact on our schools and students is truly remarkable.”

“His impact on our schools and students is truly remarkable.”

Every single day, Mr. Austin is present in the schools, taking the time to connect with students and staff – even when he does not have scheduled meetings.

Recently, when Putnam County school nutrition faced significant staffing shortages in the kitchens and with bus drivers, Mr. Austin stepped up in an extraordinary way. He personally drove a school bus in both the morning and afternoon, ensuring that our students arrived safely at school and returned home. On top of all this, he volunteered his time to transport students to various games and events, exemplifying his dedication to their extracurricular activities.

“What sets Mr. Austin apart is that this is not just a job for him; it’s his passion and calling. He has a genuine care for everyone in our district, and he routinely lends a hand in the kitchen, assists with food delivery, and helps prepare meals for our school community. To me, Mr. Austin is more than just a boss; he is a true friend to all of us—someone we can always rely on and have open conversations with,” says Teena Carr.

Additionally, Mr. Austin makes a point to attend all after-school activities, whether it’s basketball games, football matches, or other events, showing his support and fostering a sense of community. His sincerity and commitment to Putnam students’ success make him nothing short of a superhero in our eyes!
