{"id":12291,"date":"2021-04-29T00:48:40","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T00:48:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/indiana\/?p=12291"},"modified":"2021-08-10T00:49:07","modified_gmt":"2021-08-10T00:49:07","slug":"hunger-hero-helping-our-panthers-eat-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/indiana\/2021\/04\/29\/hunger-hero-helping-our-panthers-eat-hope\/","title":{"rendered":"HUNGER HERO: Helping Our Panthers Eat (HOPE)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/indiana\/tahh_banner\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12401 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/indiana\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2021\/04\/TAHH_Banner-300x157.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"578\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our story in Jennings County began in July of 2020 when a group of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">community members<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was informed that Gleaners Food Bank would need to discontinue its backpack program which sent meals home with students over the weekend in the 2020-2021 school year.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0About 28,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">00 people live in Jennings County and, before the COVID-19 pandemic, about 13.5% of all individuals were food insecure. Among children, this increased to 19.5% of the county population.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In response, a group of organizations came together in the community to fill the gap, including Joy of Giving (the non-profit arm of Harmon Construction), Good Samaritan Food Pantry, and Purdue Extension. This group grew even larger to include <span data-contrast=\"auto\">staff from<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the Jennings County School Corporation,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Decatur Mold<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, North Vernon First Baptist Church,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gleaners Food Bank,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Ascension St. Vincent Jennings Hospital. Together, they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0developed a plan to create a weekend food program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The program is simple: u<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sing local fundraising and a monthly credit from Gleaners Food Bank,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">shelf-stable\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">food<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0appropriate for children<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is purchased and stored at Good Samaritan Food Pantry. Volunteers from the community then organize food into packs and deliver them to each elementary\/middle school<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Two hundred<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0packs are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">currently<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sent home with students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0each weekend.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When the program needed startup funds to make this a reality, they turned to No Kid Hungry. Through a $25,000 grant, No Kid Hungry is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">supporting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> this <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">community effort<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">through its<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0first semester<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
