Yet, this fall,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1 in 5\u00a0kids in\u00a0Kentucky\u00a0could struggle with hunger as they re-enter the classroom.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This hunger impacts everything, including the ability to learn. Just like textbooks and pencils, food is an essential school supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The importance of ensuring children have access to food cannot be understated. Research shows that children who struggle with hunger not only have a harder time learning, but are more likely to struggle with chronic illnesses, mental health issues and behavioral problems. These problems can follow children throughout their lives, even impacting their financial prosperity.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Luckily, schools have one of the most powerful tools to combat childhood hunger at their disposal: school nutrition programs can play a massive role helping kids get the food they need.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">And that food has many benefits: not only are kids getting\u00a0their\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/now.tufts.edu\/news-releases\/study-finds-americans-eat-food-mostly-poor-nutritional-quality-except-school\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">most nutritious meals of the day<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, they\u2019re also eating on a regular schedule with their peers and trusted adults, like teachers and administrators. Beyond nutritional value, these meals also provide stability and a sense of community, which can help kids heal from the trauma they\u2019ve faced since the beginning of the pandemic. This will help kids focus on the classroom, and better allow schools to focus on building community and accelerating learning.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Here in Kentucky, school nutrition professionals and community organizations have been working tirelessly to feed kids since the beginning of the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/kentucky\/bestof-kids-sad-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11566\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-11566 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/kentucky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/09\/BestOf-Kids-Sad-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"372\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/kentucky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/09\/BestOf-Kids-Sad-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/kentucky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/09\/BestOf-Kids-Sad-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/a>Despite the opportunities and flexibilities schools have, there are still many obstacles: as schools reopen and rebuild, nutrition programs are facing unique challenges in staffing, budgeting, enrollment and reach.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">It will be necessary to monitor and adapt as the landscape on the ground changes, and the risks of shutdowns and quarantines still loom.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">There\u2019s also more work to be done: we must incorporate lessons we\u2019ve learned \u2013such as the effectiveness of maximizing SNAP benefits, as school and summer meals flexibilities allowed by USDA waivers\u2013 and make them a part of future solutions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As students go back to school this Fall, we have the opportunity to build even better and stronger institutions for the children in Kentucky.\u00a0We cannot let them down.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kids are back to school and, for many, the excitement is palpable.
