Recognizing\u00a0Kentucky\u00a0Principals That Champion School Meals Throughout the Coronavirus Pandemic<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Principals across the nation work every day with one thing in their minds: the success of their students.\u00a0They understand that ensuring kids have three meals a day is essential for their development. For this reason, principals have always been a critical part of ending childhood hunger in America.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Today, principals face an extraordinary set of challenges with staff shortages,\u00a0burnout\u00a0and the task of keeping staff and kids safe in school as the pandemic continues.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This Principal Appreciation Month,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0highlighting several school leaders\u00a0in the\u00a0School\u00a0Breakfast Champion Class of 2020\u00a0who\u00a0continue to work hand in hand with school nutrition staff and No Kid Hungry to ensure kids have the nutrition they need to learn and succeed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Dane Ferguson, Burns Middle School, Owensboro Kentucky\u00a0\u2013\u202f<\/span><\/b>Mr. Ferguson recognizes the importance of students starting their day with a healthy meal, so they are ready to learn. \u00a0Mr. Ferguson has been working at Burns Middle for 13\u00a0years and noticed that students were not eating breakfast because they either arrived late or were not hungry. \u00a0Mr. Ferguson was presented with the opportunity to add the Second Chance Breakfast program to Burns and he jumped on it. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0As a result, Mr. Ferguson has noticed that the students feel better, have less visits to the health room, and they are\u00a0more awake and ready\u00a0for the day. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Amie\u00a0Gallion, Madison County Middle, Richmond Kentucky \u2013<\/span><\/b>\u202fMs.\u00a0Gallion\u00a0has supported the creation and continuation of the school\u2019s\u00a0Second Chance Breakfast and Breakfast in the classroom programs. \u00a0After seeing how the new program significantly increased participation rates\u00a0in 2019,\u00a0Ms.\u00a0Gallion\u00a0helped the school continue the program.\u00a0\u00a0She is described by her colleagues as a leader and a friend. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Robert Lightning, Bowling Green Junior High School, Bowling Green Kentucky\u00a0– Mr.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Lightning\u00a0has been exceptional about helping promote the school meal programs.\u00a0\u00a0When Mr. Lightning started at Bowling Green, traditional breakfast was the only model being\u00a0made.\u00a0\u00a0Mr. Lightning knew that something had to be done because the school was only feeding 1\/3 of its\u00a0students.\u00a0\u00a0Mr. Lightning is an outside the box type thinker and implemented grab and go breakfast.\u00a0\u00a0There are now carts of nutritious breakfast at the end of different hallways so that students can grab their breakfast on the way to class.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This month is a recognition of those leaders who are behind the scenes, making decisions to ensure all staff are safe, school meals are out the door and kids have the food they need in times of crisis and not.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As 1 in 6\u202fkids in Kentucky could be living with hunger, we thank school principals who understand the importance of school meals.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
