Earlier this week, Rachel <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/citylimits.org\/2025\/01\/06\/opinion-2025-and-new-yorks-fight-against-child-hunger\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">published an op-ed<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> calling on the Governor to take up the fight against child hunger \u2013 including by making no-cost breakfast and lunch universal.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNo-cost, universal school meals ensure all our kids are nourished \u2013 it\u2019s really that simple. With this plan to provide New York students with no-cost breakfast and lunch, Governor Hochul is taking major strides to end child hunger. At a time when food insecurity is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/publications\/pub-details?pubid=109895\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and families <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/new-york\/new-poll-amid-affordability-crisis-more-new-yorkers-struggling-with-rising-food-prices-and-cutting-back-on-healthy-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are struggling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to put food on the table, bold proposals like these can help parents make ends meet, move the needle on reducing poverty, and demonstrate how government can do big things. Now, as proposals in Congress and comments from the incoming administration raise fears about cuts to federal programs, it\u2019s critical that New York is ready for what\u2019s to come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNew York has the power to intervene in the child hunger crisis, but only if we act now. People across the state have been energized by the Governor\u2019s plan to expand the Empire Child Tax Credit and make no-cost school meals universal. Now, we need the Legislature, City leaders, and partners at every level of government to take action. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We can\u2019t ever resign ourselves to more kids facing hunger, or more families going without the help they need. Every child in New York deserves three healthy, nutritious meals a day.
