NEW YORK, NY (September 22, 2025) \u2014 <\/b>The Trump Administration confirmed on Saturday plans to eliminate the U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s (USDA) annual Household Food Security Report, an annual survey that has measured national data on hunger in America for 30 years. The decision comes on the heels of nearly $200 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) signed into law this summer. <\/span>The following is a statement from Rachel Sabella, Director of No Kid Hungry New York:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cWe should all be deeply concerned about the Trump Administration\u2019s move to eliminate the USDA\u2019s annual hunger report. This data has been used for three decades to show trends in food insecurity in New York and across our nation, and in turn, how policy decisions impact how children and families all over America experience hunger.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBy helping policymakers and advocates understand hunger trends, this research helps ensure we\u2019re wisely investing taxpayer dollars efficiently and effectively on programs that work to end hunger.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe government is uniquely positioned to conduct this body of research which forms the foundation for food insecurity data tracking nationwide. Cancelling it is the latest signal that data-driven efforts to end hunger are not a priority for this administration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is no coincidence that this comes on the heels of the most extreme cuts that have ever been made to SNAP – America\u2019s largest food assistance program, and one of the most effective tools we have to fight hunger. The $200 billion in SNAP cuts within H.R. 1 will make it harder for 42 million Americans – including 3 million New Yorkers – to access grocery benefits. This will cause a spike in hunger in coming years that the administration doesn\u2019t want us to see.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHere in New York, where half of all families are <\/span>going into debt<\/span><\/a> to cover the cost of food, we simply can\u2019t afford these cuts to the tried-and-true research and programs that help to keep kids fed. That\u2019s why the focus should be on smart policy to eliminate hunger \u2013 not on eliminating evidence of hunger. As a government shutdown looms, our elected officials must act quickly to fund critical nutrition programs and roll back the devastating impact H.R. 1 will have on New York\u2019s ability to provide SNAP benefits to the children and families who need them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
