NEW YORK, NY (April 30, 2026) \u2013<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Today, the House of Representatives passed the\u00a0<\/span>Farm, Food, and National Security Act<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(the \u201cFarm Bill\u201d), legislation that reauthorizes the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other key nutrition programs. The legislation will now go to the U.S. Senate for consideration.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The following is a statement from Rachel Sabella, director of No Kid Hungry New York:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s vote moves us in the wrong direction for kids and families who are already struggling to afford food.\u00a0By passing this Farm Bill without mitigating the harm of the historic SNAP cuts, the House has effectively voted to lock those cuts in place for five years or more, offering no relief to the families and states, like New York, struggling with the consequences.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe bill passed by the House does nothing to mitigate the damage being done by the nearly $200 billion in cuts to SNAP approved last year. <\/span>The bill leaves greater SNAP cost-sharing requirements for states and counties in place. This is creating new challenges for New York as Albany and counties across the state work to deliver benefits efficiently and keep families enrolled. As Governor Hochul and the New York State Legislature work to enact historic policies to reduce fraud, expand summer meal programs, increase support for food banks, and broaden access to affordable child care, the federal government should be supporting their efforts \u2013 not undermining them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re already seeing how these cuts are playing out. Families are facing higher grocery bills while navigating new barriers to accessing food assistance. Recent\u00a0<\/span>polling<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from No Kid Hungry New York found that two-thirds of all New Yorkers – and nearly three-quarters of families with children – have had to choose between buying food and paying for essentials like rent or utilities. Nationwide,\u00a0<\/span>millions of people<\/span><\/a>\u00a0have already lost SNAP benefits since those changes took effect, and more are at risk of losing support in the months ahead.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt a moment when food prices remain high and families are stretched thin, SNAP is one of the most effective tools we have to help parents put meals on the table. New Yorkers overwhelmingly support SNAP, because we understand what\u2019s at stake here: weakening the program makes it harder for kids to get the nutrition they need to learn, grow, and stay healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur best opportunity to prevent the impending hunger crisis is slipping away.\u00a0<\/span>Senators Schumer and Gillibrand can lead the way\u00a0and support New Yorkers by ensuring the Senate returns to a bipartisan Farm Bill process that restores, protects, and invests in SNAP before it is too late.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
