Covering 252 square miles of northern New York, the district serves a large rural area where transportation and distance can make accessing summer programs difficult. That’s why Edwards-Knox is offering non-congregate meal service, allowing parents and caregivers to pick up multiple days of meals at one time rather than making daily trips to a meal site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On July 10, the district’s first meal distribution of the summer doubled as a community celebration\u2014and what a celebration it was!<\/span><\/p>\n

Children bounced between activities with cotton candy-stained fingers and snow cone-colored smiles. Families gathered over free hot dogs and hamburgers while enjoying popcorn, games, and opportunities to connect with neighbors. It was the kind of summer afternoon that creates lasting memories while reminding families that support is available when school is out.<\/span><\/p>\n

The district will continue offering weekend meal packages every Friday in July and seven-day meal boxes every Friday in August, helping ensure children have consistent access to nutritious meals throughout the summer months.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most impactful to me, however, were the conversations with parents and caregivers. Several shared how much they appreciate being able to pick up multiple days of meals at once, eliminating the need for frequent trips and making it easier to fit meal pickup into busy schedules. Families also praised the district’s expanded pickup hours, noting that they can now stop by on their way home from work.<\/span><\/p>\n

For families in rural communities, these conveniences are more than just helpful\u2014they can be the difference between participating in a summer meals program and going without. By reducing transportation barriers and offering flexible pickup options, Edwards-Knox is ensuring more children can access the nutritious meals they need to grow, play, and thrive all summer long.<\/span><\/p>\n

The kick-off event was a reminder that summer meals are about more than food. They’re about reducing stress for families, supporting working parents, strengthening community connections, and making sure every child has the nourishment they need to enjoy summer today and return to school ready to learn in the fall.<\/span><\/p>\n
