My name is Stacie Sanchez Hare, and it is my privilege to work with you all to end childhood hunger<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in our great state<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. I am a proud Native Texan and reside in my hometown<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">San Antonio.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hat has been a tremendously difficult year for many Texa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ns<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0come<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0close<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, it is a natural time of reflection<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and gratitude<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">midst all the challenges<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0we\u2019ve faced<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0this year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, there are stories of hope &#8211; among them,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">champions that have worked tirelessly to ensure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0our children<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0still<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0have food in their bellies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In March<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">No Kid Hungry announced its 2020 School Breakfast Hall of Fame, educators<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and administrators from school districts across the country who were nominated by members of their local community for making sure their students start<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0each day with a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">healthy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0breakfast. <a href=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/texas\/2020\/03\/04\/release-six-texans-welcomed-into-no-kid-hungry-school-breakfast-hall-of-fame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Among them were six Texans<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0who even before the pandemic were going above and beyond to ensure kids in their community\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ha<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nutrition,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0they need<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to reach their full potential. During these unprecedented times, champions emerged, shared their stories, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">found<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0innovative solutions to new problems. For example, Robert Cuellar, Director of Child Nutrition at Laredo ISD and No Kid Hungry Champion<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r_EW6XWQOYI&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> joined Taniya Navak earlier this year<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to talk about the great work happening in Laredo, Texas. Robert and his\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">staff serve the kids in his community just as if they were his own<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0as do so many Hunger Heroes across the state do.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11629 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/texas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/12\/at-Social-Distancing-3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/texas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/12\/at-Social-Distancing-3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/texas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/12\/at-Social-Distancing-3-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/texas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/12\/at-Social-Distancing-3.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Creativity <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">abundant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0across the state this year as operations had to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">adapt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to changing circumstances.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In San Antonio,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Southside ISD redeployed their bus drivers from transporting students to transporting meals to kids in the community. The problem? No one was showing up to pick them up. So\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Child Nutrition Director Janie Ramirez<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0got even more innovative, installing a speaker\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">each of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the bus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">es<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that<a href=\"http:\/\/3-785bc2d2-98a2-4b2b-bd27-3b43f7256da0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> played the common melodies of an ice cream truck<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, prompting kids to come out and get a meal.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Since the change, participation jumped from 800 kids a day to 2,300<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Since the onset of the pandemic, No <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kid Hungry Texas has mobilized to respond\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to unexpected<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0needs across our state, granting more than $4.5\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">million to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0121 schools and community organizations in every corner of Texas.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Here are just a few examples of the work my team has been proud to support this year through grant funding and technical assistance:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0helped sites distribute 180,000 pounds of food over 10 weeks to families affected by the pandemic.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the rural, east Texas town of\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pollok<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, where most families cannot reach school meal sites,\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Central Independent School District<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0purchased temperature-controlled equipment to bring food to safe, convenient locations around the community.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pflugerville Independent School District<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0used our funds to alert low-income and homebound students, as well as those living in remote areas, to the approximately 9,000 healthy meals a day they served.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">In\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">El Paso<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sacred Heart Church<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0used an emergency grant to provide dinners five days a week to 100 families in the community.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">IDEA Public Schools<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0provided an estimated 1.6 million meals this summer to hungry kids across Texas at nearly 100 locations across the state.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Food for the Soul<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0partnered with local churches, using grant funds from No Kid Hungry to distribute food and offer drive-thru pick-up at sites across the\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dallas-Fort Worth<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0region.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span ISD<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0serve over 870,000 meals across their community during the spring and summer months of the COVID-19 school closure.<\/span><span
