[April 15, 2025, Austin, Texas]<\/b> – Austin ISD is proud to announce the official return of its popular food truck meal program, the Nacho Average Food Truck.<\/span> The rotating food truck will offer breakfast and lunch to high school students across the district, providing alternatives to traditional cafeteria meal service.<\/span><\/p>\n

Austin ISD Food Service initially purchased the food truck in 2017 through grant funding, however, operations were halted in 2020 due to the pandemic and staffing shortages. This innovative program was reintroduced to the district through a partnership with <\/span>No Kid Hungry Texas<\/span><\/a>, a nonprofit dedicated to ending childhood hunger, which provided grant funding to repair the truck for a spring reopening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSchool meal programs play a vital role in tackling food insecurity and have notable benefits for student achievement and attendance,\u201d said Mia Medina, Senior Program Manager of No Kid Hungry Texas. \u201cBy supporting this innovative program, we\u2019re hoping to reach more high school students with nutritious meals\u2014without the stigma often associated with these programs. It\u2019s about making healthy options more accessible, welcoming, and part of the everyday school experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The food truck will rotate between Austin ISD high schools, spending two consecutive days at each campus. Students will use their school meal accounts to dine at the truck, which offers free, reduced-price, and paid options. Eight high schools participate in the Community Eligibility Program (CEP), which allows all students to receive meals from the truck at no cost.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re excited to reintroduce this incredible program with the help of No Kid Hungry Texas, and expect a boost in participation in our nutrition programs at high schools across the district,\u201d said Diane Grodek, Executive Chef of Austin ISD. \u201cStudents and staff consistently show excitement and interest in the menus we offer through the food truck, which offers new recipes that are not available in the cafeterias. The food truck\u00a0 provides students with a flexible and uniquely Austin way of eating meals during the school day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Each morning, students and staff can enjoy made-to-order breakfast bagel sandwiches, grab n\u2019 go muffins and bars, fruit, juice, and milk. Lunch service includes scratch-made burritos, bean salad, fresh fruit, and milk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
