Richmond, VA (Nov. 13, 2019)<\/strong> \u2013 Three new school divisions, along with 12 repeat winners, received the Dorothy S. McAuliffe School Nutrition Award presented by No Kid Hungry Virginia this November.<\/p>\n

The Dorothy S. McAuliffe School Nutrition Award celebrates Virginia school divisions that have gone above and beyond by operating all available federal child nutrition programs and achieving exceptional participation in the school breakfast program. Originally launched in 2017, the award is named in honor of former First Lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe, in recognition of her efforts to end childhood hunger in the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n

\u201cVirginia has become a national model for ending childhood hunger because of the hard work and innovative approaches of this year\u2019s School Nutrition Award recipients,\u201d said Mrs. McAuliffe. \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to celebrate these school districts for their ongoing commitment to making sure students can access the meals and other resources they need to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

First-time winners include:
\n\u25cf Franklin County Public Schools
\n\u25cf Greensville County Public Schools
\n\u25cf Suffolk City Public Schools<\/p>\n

Second and third-year winners include:
\n\u25cf Bristol City Public Schools
\n\u25cf Buchanan County Public Schools
\n\u25cf Colonial Beach Public Schools
\n\u25cf Danville City Public Schools
\n\u25cf Harrisonburg City Public Schools
\n\u25cf Newport News City Public Schools
\n\u25cf Pulaski County Public Schools
\n\u25cf Richmond City Public Schools
\n\u25cf Southampton County Public Schools
\n\u25cf Staunton City Public Schools
\n\u25cf Westmoreland County Public Schools
\n\u25cf West Point Public Schools<\/p>\n

\u201cSchools play a critical role in connecting children with the nutrition they need to fuel their bodies and their brains,\u201d said Claire Mansfield, No Kid Hungry Virginia state director. \u201cWe\u2019re excited to honor more school districts this year. It\u2019s thanks to strong public-private partnerships and commitments from community members, school leadership, teachers and school nutrition teams that we\u2019ve been able to connect more schools \u2013 and students \u2013 with federal nutrition programs.\u201d<\/p>\n

To qualify for the award, school divisions met the following criteria:
\n\u25cf School Breakfast: At least 70% of students who qualify for free\/reduced meals and eat school lunch are also eating school breakfast.
\n\u25cf Afterschool Meals: Division is sponsoring and serving meals\/snacks through the At-Risk Afterschool Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), if eligible.
\n\u25cf Summer Meals: Division is sponsoring and serving summer meals through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) or National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Seamless Summer Option (SSO), if eligible.<\/p>\n

No Kid Hungry Virginia partners with schools and districts to connect eligible kids to federal nutrition programs. Programs like Breakfast After the Bell, afterschool meals and summer meals help feed kids throughout the school day and in the summertime.<\/p>\n
