This goal is only possible through robust collaboration, innovative public-private partnerships, thoughtful outreach, and dedicated advocacy for policies proven to feed kids and lift families out of poverty.<\/span><\/h3><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read on to learn more about our favorite highlights from 2022:<\/span><\/h5><ul><li><b>January: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We partnered with Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney to celebrate the launch of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mayorshungeralliance.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a new initiative that taps the individual and collective leadership of a nonpartisan group of mayors around the country. We received nearly 60 nominations and featured the nominees in Virginia\u2019s National School Lunch Hero <\/span><a state\u2019s two-year budget, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/virginia\/2022\/06\/22\/approved-state-budget-increases-school-meal-access\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">included $8.2 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to eliminate the cost of reduced-price school meals. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc29.com\/2022\/07\/11\/virginia-budget-provide-more-than-60k-students-with-free-school-meals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">important funding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> helps approximately 64,500 more students access free school breakfast and lunch!\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>July:<\/strong> For many students, summer can be the hungriest time of the year. We <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/virginia\/2022\/05\/19\/summer-updates-and-resources\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">promoted opportunities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to connect children and families to healthy meals when school is out of session, including the No Kid Hungry texting hotline. In the summer months, text \u2018FOOD\u2019 or \u2018COMIDA\u2019 to 304-304 to find meal sites near you.<\/span><\/li><li><b>August: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students returned back to school without pandemic-era nutrition waivers for the first time in two years. Our team worked hard to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/virginia\/2022\/08\/30\/back-to-school-food-is-the-most-important-school-supply\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">spread the message<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> about the changes and encourage families to apply for free and reduced-price meals. We partnered with the Virginia Department of Education to generate dozens of media stories, like these hits from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudounnow.com\/2022\/09\/06\/no-kid-hungry-balow-urge-parents-to-apply-for-free-school-meals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Loudoun Now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtvr.com\/news\/local-news\/with-new-eligibility-which-virginia-families-will-qualify-for-free-school-meals-august-23-2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CBS 6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li><li><b>September: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We worked alongside the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, the Virginia Department of Social Services, and Virginia\u2019s network of regional Hunger Action Coalitions to organize a series of listening sessions that will inform the 2022-2023 update to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dss.virginia.gov\/files\/division\/oisi\/food_security\/resources\/virginia_roadmap_to_end_hunger_update.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Virginia Roadmap to End Hunger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><b>October: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the VDOE Farm to School and Directors Conference in Charlottesville, we got a little \u201ccorny\u201d as we presented team-building strategies that help staff feel included and appreciated. We love any opportunity to listen and learn from Virginia\u2019s a-maize-ing network of school nutrition directors. \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 \u00a0 href=\"https:\/\/state.nokidhungry.org\/virginia\/2022\/12\/15\/no-kid-hungry-virginia-awards-255801-in-grants-to-17-schools-and-community-organizations-to-address-food-insecurity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">final grant cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of 2022. This year, we awarded over $1 million in grant funding to nearly 50 school nutrition and community-based organizations across the state! These funds will help ensure children and families have access to nutritious meals and resources 365 days a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><b>December:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> We joined our Virginia Department of Education partners at a national USDA conference to spotlight Virginia\u2019s expansion of the Community Eligibility Provision, a program that allows eligible schools to offer breakfast and lunch at no cost to all students. In school year 2022-2023, an all-time high of 1,082 public schools offer CEP, reaching 566,733 public school students with access to free meals. An incredible 64% of Virginia\u2019s public school divisions offer CEP at all their schools.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From our team to yours, wishing you a restful winter break.
