STATEMENT: No Kid Hungry applauds Alabama’s decision to implement the SUN Bucks program to ensure half a million children in the state have access to summer nutrition

In her State of the State address, Governor Kay Ivey praised Alabama’s students’ aggressive academic achievement—rising significantly in both reading and math test scores. Alabama’s decision to operate the SUN Bucks summer program will provide access to proper nutrition the whole year through for over half a million young Alabamians. Here’s a statement from Kate Goodin with No Kid Hungry Alabama:

“Alabama students are making gains in the classroom, but summer hunger remains a persistent problem for many kids across the state that rely on school meals. But Alabama’s decision to implement the SUN Bucks program this summer will be a gamechanger. Access to nutritious meals is essential to ensuring Alabama kids come back to school physically and mentally prepared to learn, and this marks a significant step in ensuring that children have what they need to thrive.”
