Baton Rouge, LA – In Washington DC today, Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome was named vice-chair of the Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger, a nonpartisan coalition working in partnership with the national nonprofit Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry campaign. Mayor-President Broome was an inaugural member of the Alliance, launched last year, and will take on the chair position in 2024.
The Mayors Alliance taps the individual and collective leadership of mayors to take meaningful action to end childhood hunger in communities nationwide through policies and partnerships that promote access to school and summer meal programs, grocery benefits like WIC and SNAP and a whole host of local resources.
“Hunger is a solvable issue, a non-partisan issue and one of the most important investments we can make in our next generation,” said Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome. “I look forward to working with Chair Mayor John Giles and more than 130 Mayors across the country on smart solutions to end hunger here in Baton Rouge and in every community across our nation.”
Mayor Broome is joined on the Mayors Alliance by three other Louisiana Mayors: LaToya Cantrell (New Orleans), Friday Ellis (Monroe) and Nic Hunter (Lake Charles).
“No Kid Hungry has a long history of partnering with schools and community organizations in Baton Rouge to ensure kids get the nutrition they need to thrive in the classroom and beyond,” said No Kid Hungry Louisiana Director Rhonda Jackson. “I’m proud and grateful to see Mayor Broome take on this national leadership role, and look forward to collaborating on solutions to end hunger here in Louisiana and in communities across our country.”
During the pandemic, state, local and national leaders took urgent action to fight childhood hunger – tactics that worked to stave off greater rates of food insecurity despite the severe economic hardships. The Mayors Alliance harnesses the expertise of mayors from across the political spectrum to continue driving change at the state and national level.
