6/5/25, AUSTIN, TEXAS — On Saturday, the Texas Legislature approved the biennial state budget, which includes $60 million in funding for the Summer EBT program. The budget will now be under consideration by Governor Abbott, who will sign it into law. The following is a joint statement from No Kid Hungry Texas Director Stacie Sanchez Hare and Representative Armando Walle (TX-140):
“We applaud the Texas Legislature for taking bold action to implement Summer EBT in the summer of 2027, a major victory that will nourish over 3.75 million children in Texas.
“This proven, effective program will ensure kids continue to get the nutrition they need during the summer months when school meals are no longer available. By providing extra grocery dollars, Summer EBT will help families buy more nutritious foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as proteins like meat and fish. This additional support will be a critical lifeline for families, especially as more than three-quarters (77%) of Texans say it’s getting harder to afford groceries, according to No Kid Hungry Texas’ 2024 poll.
“Summer EBT will also ease the burden on family budgets, helping parents and caregivers avoid difficult trade-offs between putting food on the table and paying for other necessities like rent, utilities, or medication.
“By joining 37 other states in offering this pivotal program, Texas lawmakers have taken a powerful stand against childhood hunger.
Stacie Sanchez Hare added, “We are proud to have worked alongside fellow anti-hunger organizations and community advocates to make this a reality, and deeply grateful to legislative champions Rep. Armando Walle and Rep. Toni Rose, who worked tirelessly to ensure Summer EBT made it into the Texas state budget.
“Summer has traditionally been the hungriest time of year for Texas kids, but now it doesn’t have to be. We are eager to see the lasting impact this program will have on the health and wellbeing of children and their families across our great state.”
