A New Chapter for Food Access in South Texas: The Brownsville Cannery Public Market Opens

By October 16, 2026No Comments

On October 8, the Brownsville Cannery Public Market celebrated its grand opening, bringing fresh food, community resources, and opportunities to learn and connect under one roof. This marks an important milestone in expanding access to fresh food and community resources across South Texas.

No Kid Hungry is proud to support this transformative community-driven effort to strengthen food access and connect local families with the resources they need.

Located in Brownsville, about an hour south of the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley in Pharr, the Cannery is designed to strengthen food access while creating new opportunities for community connection. The center will serve as a permanent home for the Brownsville Farmers Market, managed by the Brownsville Wellness Coalition, and host a Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley food pantry offering grocery distribution and support services.

Beyond providing access to food, the Cannery will offer cooking classes, gardening workshops, wellness programming, walking trails, and shaded gathering spaces. Together, these resources will help families access fresh food, build practical skills, and connect with services that support their well-being.

The opening represents an important step toward ensuring Brownsville families have greater access to food and the resources they need. And we are honored to partner with the City of Brownsville, the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, and regional leaders on this effort. The Cannery is an example of what is possible when communities come together around locally driven solutions that help families access the food they need.

We look forward to seeing the Cannery’s continued impact as it becomes a gathering place for the Brownsville community and a lasting resource for families across South Texas.
