Celebrating School Breakfast with Alexandria’s Mayor Alyia Gaskins

In her role as Vice Chair of the Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger, Alexandria City’s Mayor Alyia Gaskins is committed to ensuring every child has access to healthy meals.

A nonpartisan coalition of more than 550 mayors working with No Kid Hungry, the Mayors Alliance harnesses the individual and collective leadership of Mayors to take meaningful actions to end childhood hunger.

Mayor Gaskins knows that school meals are an essential component of any community’s food security strategy. On March 4, she celebrated National School Breakfast Week at Alexandria City Public Schools’ Patrick Henry Elementary.

Patrick Henry Elementary uses a meal service model called “Breakfast in the Classroom,” where school nutrition staff pack and deliver meals door-to-door, so students enjoy a convenient and delicious meal in their seat during morning announcements. Thanks to this flexibility, nearly 700 students at Patrick Henry Elementary enjoy breakfast each morning. With nutritious options like whole wheat Belgian waffles and yogurt topped with fresh seasonal fruit, the school has one of the highest participation rates in the city of Alexandria.

Mayor Gaskins joined school division leadership in honoring the hard work of school staff who work together to prepare, deliver, serve, and clean up after each day’s breakfast service.

She issued an official mayoral National School Breakfast Week proclamation, recognizing Alexandria’s dedication to student success. On behalf of Alexandria City Council, she declared March 2-6, 2026 as “School Breakfast Week” in Alexandria and thanked the “parents, caregivers, teachers, and school food personnel all play an essential role to ensure the children of Alexandria have the basic resources needed to grow, learn, discover their own potential, and live happy fulfilling lives.”

Thank you, Mayor Gaskins, for being a part of #TeamNoKidHungry. To all of our school nutrition heroes, Happy National School Breakfast Week! We are so grateful for you.
