USDA Decision to Eliminate Hunger Report Raises Concerns

STATEMENT: USDA Decision to Eliminate Hunger Report Raises Concerns

FLORIDA (September 24, 2025) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed on Saturday plans to eliminate the Household Food Security Report, an annual survey that has measured national data on hunger in America for three decades. The Household Food Security Report is a critical resource guiding policy and program decisions designed to combat food insecurity in our country and support access to healthy, nutritious food. The following is a statement from Sky Beard, Florida Director of No Kid Hungry.

“Food insecurity is felt in every community across the state of Florida, where last year’s USDA report showed nearly 23% of children live in households that don’t have enough food for the whole family. By helping policymakers and advocates understand hunger trends, this research helps ensure we’re wisely investing taxpayer dollars efficiently and effectively on programs that work to end hunger.

The government is uniquely positioned to conduct this body of research which forms the foundation for food insecurity data tracking nationwide.

“The elimination of this report comes at a deeply concerning time for American families. Under H.R. 1, historic cuts were made to SNAP – America’s largest food assistance program, and one of the most effective tools we have to fight hunger. Without the annual Household Food Security Report, the impact and repercussions of these decisions will be much harder to evaluate.

“In Florida, more than half of all families are going into debt to cover the cost of food. Now more than ever, we need policy makers to be able to make data-driven decisions to eliminate hunger.

“We urge our Congress to act quickly to fund critical nutrition programs and roll back the devastating impact H.R. 1 will have on Florida’s ability to provide SNAP benefits to the children and families who need them.”

On October 22, the last Household Food Security Report will be released, reflecting data from 2024.
