Richmond, Va. (Jan. 13, 2022) – On Thursday, January 13, Mayor Levar Stoney joined more than 50 other mayors from across the country in the launch of the Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger. Mayor Stoney will serve as Chair of the new initiative, a nonpartisan coalition that will tap the individual and collective leadership of mayors to take meaningful action to end childhood hunger in cities nationwide.
There is no excuse for children to go hungry in this country. Yet it happens – every day, in every community. In the United States today, nearly 12 million children live in families considered food insecure.
“As we continue to navigate the ongoing global pandemic, too many children and families are experiencing food insecurity,” said Stoney. “I’m proud to stand alongside No Kid Hungry and mayors across the country to create solutions to end childhood hunger. No child, in Richmond or any other community in our nation, deserves to question where their next meal comes from when we know that hunger is a solvable issue.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, state, local and national leaders took urgent action to fight childhood hunger – tactics that worked to stave off greater rates of food insecurity despite the severe economic hardships brought on by the pandemic. The Mayors Alliance will harness the collective expertise of mayors from across the political spectrum to continue driving change at the state and national level.
The Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger will partner with the national nonprofit Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry campaign.
“We’re incredibly grateful for Mayor Stoney’s longtime commitment to ending child hunger – from calling on Congress to expand SNAP benefits, to being a steadfast champion of the summer meals program in Richmond,” says Sarah Steely, the director of No Kid Hungry Virginia. “We applaud his leadership role in the Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger and look forward to continuing to work alongside him to ensure kids in Virginia have the nutrition they need to thrive.”
