As the leaves transition to hues of amber and scarlet, October emerges as a month of bounty and celebration in Virginia schools. It’s a time when school nutrition takes center stage, reminding us of the vital role it plays in the health and well-being of our students.

Crunch Heard 'Round the Commonwealth: October 5th, 2023

On October 5th, 2023, the Virginia Department of Education, Office of School Nutrition Programs invites students, teachers, and communities across the state to join in the “Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth.” This synchronized crunch on fresh, local apples is not just a delightful and symbolic act; it’s a collective celebration of healthy eating and local agriculture.

Imagine the sound of countless crisp apples being bitten into simultaneously—an audible affirmation of our commitment to promoting nutritious choices and supporting local farmers. It’s a simple act that resonates with the powerful idea that, together, we can create a healthier, more vibrant future for our children.

National School Lunch Week: October 9th-15th

Following the Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth, we dive into National School Lunch Week from October 9th to 15th. It’s a time to celebrate the heroes behind the scenes—Virginia’s school nutrition teams. These incredible individuals work tirelessly to provide nourishing meals that go beyond sustenance; they are crafted with love and care to fuel the minds and bodies of our students.

This week is an opportunity to express our gratitude to these often unsung educators who contribute to the well-being of our communities. It’s a time to recognize the dedication, hard work, and thoughtfulness that go into every meal served in our schools. Below you’ll see some of our favorite Virginia lunches over the years.

A Month of Gratitude and Celebration

As we celebrate throughout October, let’s also acknowledge the year-round impact and efforts of school breakfast and lunch programs. These meals are more than a convenience; they are a healthy, accessible, and low- or no-cost resource for thousands of Virginia families.

The cafeteria is more than just a place to eat—it’s a hub of nourishment, connection, and care. Students who eat school meals have better concentration and health, perform better on tests, and attend more days of school. Support for school meals is support for Virginia’s K-12 education system and the future of the Commonwealth’s workforce.

As autumn unfolds, let’s embrace the joy of this season—a time of nourishing minds, cultivating communities, and sowing the seeds for a healthier, brighter future for our children.
