October is Farm to School Month and we’re celebrating with the Kentucky Farm to School Network all month long. Schools across Kentucky are celebrating by participating in the Kentucky Crunch, visiting farms, and eating Kentucky-grown food in classrooms and cafeterias.
There are many ways to get celebrate Farm to School this year. At Bowling Green Independent Schools, all students in preschool – fifth grades will visit Need More Acres Farm in Scottsville, Kentucky.
Need More Acres, owned and operated by the Howell family, has been a partner with BGISD for several years, and provides many types of produce to the district throughout the school year and the summer meals program.
Students at Franklin Independent Schools participated in their own Kentucky Crunch as they munch on fresh gala apples, lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers and onions from nearby farms.
Schools that participate in Farm to School are recognizing the importance of farmers this year with Farm to School yard signs. Students from Harlan County to Trimble County show their support of the local farmers that grow their food.
