Nutrition education is a founding principle of No Kid Hungry. The Cooking Matters curriculum was developed to teach students to make healthier choices and to cook delicious, affordable meals.

No Kid Hungry NC partners with Inter-Faith Food Shuttle to hold Cooking Matters classes at elementary schools in Orange County, NC, and at meal sites across the state during the summer. Since March 2020, NKH NC’s partner program at UNC, Carolina Hunger Initiative, has taken Cooking Matters classes online for kids and families. CHI has also worked with UNC students to create an expanding library of nutrition education resources.

Incorporating nutrition education into federal Child Nutrition Program sites can also help to promote the healthy foods being served. Consider incorporating nutrition education into your School Breakfast, At-Risk Afterschool Meals, or Summer Meals program!

Nutrition education can also be used to teach families how to stretch their food dollars while making healthy choices. Through the UNC SNAP-Ed Child Nutrition Project, No Kid Hungry NC has been partnering with Child Nutrition Programs to provide nutrition education since 2015.
