NEW YORK, NY (January 8, 2026) – New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani today announced a transformative plan to expand child care access for New York families. The following statement is attributable to Rachel Sabella, Director of No Kid Hungry New York:
“Governor Hochul and Mayor Mamdani’s joint effort to expand access to affordable, reliable child care will have a direct, transformative impact on family stability and food security. Child care is often the single largest expense for families with young children. Reducing or eliminating that cost allows families to afford other essentials, like groceries, housing, and utilities. Just as importantly, safe and dependable child care allows parents and caregivers to work, pursue education, or access job training – all critical steps toward long-term economic mobility.
“Addressing hunger means addressing the systems that drive economic insecurity. Affordable, accessible child care is a foundational step toward building a sustainable pathway for children and their families to grow, learn, and thrive.”
