NO KID HUNGRY CELEBRATES UNIVERSAL SCHOOL MEALS EXPANDING STATEWIDE IN NEW YORK, EXPANDING CHILD TAX CREDIT

No Kid Hungry New York Director Rachel Sabella issued this statement celebrating the passage of the New York State budget that includes new funding to provide no-cost, universal school meals for all students in New York, as well as the expansion of the Empire State Child Tax Credit.

“Providing meals at no charge to all students in school means every child gets fed. With this budget’s passage, New York is leading the way in the fight against child hunger, showing that bold, people-first policy can improve lives. Together with the expansion of the state’s Child Tax Credit, this budget will keep money in the pockets of families to afford groceries and other essentials.

“At a time when New Yorkers are taking on more debt just to pay for food, these decisive steps will help parents make ends meet, reduce childhood poverty, and guarantee that students are better prepared to learn and thrive.

“Governor Hochul, Speaker Heastie, Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and legislators from both parties have taken powerful action to right child hunger and poverty in New York. Thank you for listening to the people. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier future for our kids.”
