New York schools and nonprofits continue to offer free meals to combat childhood hunger while school is out this summer

“We want all kids in New York to get the food they need this summer so they can return to school in the fall healthy and ready to learn,” says No Kid Hungry New York Director Rachel Sabella

NEW YORK, NY: School is out for the summer, but all across New York school districts and nonprofits continue to offer no cost meals to ensure kids have the nutrition they need. No Kid Hungry recently announced an additional $984,000 in grants to help over 45 organizations across the state expand their programs to reach even more kids, part of the more than $3.8 million the campaign has invested since the start of the pandemic to ensure all children in New York remain healthy and ready to learn.

Due to pandemic-related waivers, schools and community organizations can again this year offer grab ‘n go, bundled or delivered meals to all kids and teens at no cost. The grant funding supports the equipment needed to safely reach as many kids as possible with summer meals, including meal delivery, refrigeration and transportation costs.

“As we continue to rebuild and recover from the devastating economic impact the pandemic has had on New Yorkers, Summer Meals are more important than ever,” said No Kid Hungry New York Director Rachel Sabella. “From New York City to Long Island, Rochester, Buffalo and beyond, food insecurity exists in every corner of New York. We’re proud to support the schools and nonprofits working tirelessly to support their communities and ensure all kids have the nutrition they need to return to school this fall healthy and ready to learn.”

No Kid Hungry is helping families find summer meals near them through our Free Meals Finder map and texting hotline. Parents and caregivers can text the word “FOOD” (or “COMIDA”) to 877-877 to find sites in their neighborhood.
