On Friday, May 5, school nutrition professionals will be celebrated statewide for SCHOOL NUTRITION HERO DAY!

These heroes make sure students have the healthy food they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

During the pandemic, many of them were ready on day one of school closures to continue providing food to children. School nutrition professionals continue to overcome the supply chain and staffing obstacles that have grown in recent years. And their work has never been more important for families that depend on free, nutritious meals at school while dealing with rising costs for housing, healthcare, and transportation.

To celebrate these school nutrition heroes, the Carolina Hunger Initiative and No Kid Hungry NC team put together a super-team of hero profiles. With almost 2,500 schools serving meals in North Carolina, there are more heroes than we could possibly recognize at once. This team represents the heroes statewide, as nominated by principals, administrators, and colleagues who took the time to highlight the great work happening in their schools and districts.

School Lunch Hero Day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series.  School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million of America’s students each school day.

In North Carolina, we celebrate School NUTRITION Hero Day to recognize the heroes serving not only lunch, but also school breakfast, afterschool snacks and meals, summer meals, and more.
