No Kid Hungry California Responds to Governor Newsom’s Budget Proposal

Sacramento, Calif. – The Director of No Kid Hungry California, in response to Governor Newsom’s proposed budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year, has expressed strong support for the continued investment in key educational initiatives, including the universal school meals program.

The governor’s budget proposal, which notably includes an increase of $122.2 million in the ongoing Proposition 98 General Fund, is set to fund the universal school meals program fully. This enhancement is bolstered by the support of Summer EBT funding, which further commits to nourishing California’s youth. This crucial program is anticipated to serve over 845 million meals in the 2024-25 school year, ensuring that no child in California’s schools goes hungry. The inclusion of Summer EBT funds exemplifies the state’s dedication to extending nutritional support beyond the school year, promoting food security for students throughout the summer months.

“We are grateful for the Governor’s commitment to sustaining and enhancing the universal school meals program”, said Kathy Saile, No Kid Hungry California Director. “This increase in funding is a monumental step in our ongoing fight against child hunger. With this program, we are not just filling plates, but we are fueling futures. Every meal served is a building block in a child’s education and overall well-being. California should be proud of its commitment to ensure all kids are getting healthy meals throughout the school year and during the summer.”
