Pasadena, CA – As kids across the state head back to school this fall, many more students will be well-nourished and ready to learn thanks to Breakfast After the Bell, a program that increases access to school breakfast by bringing it out of the cafeteria and making it a part of the school day.

In 2019 to date, No Kid Hungry California has awarded more than $703,454 in grants to support nearly 100 schools across the state that will implement or expand their breakfast programs in the 2019-2020 school year. In addition to grant funding to support critical equipment, staffing and marketing needs, No Kid Hungry provides technical assistance to districts as they implement new programs.

More than 1 in 5 children in California live in families that struggle with hunger. Research shows that hunger has long-term ramifications on children, including lower test scores, weaker attendance rates, and a higher risk of hospitalizations and chronic diseases. No Kid Hungry California and its partners focus on Breakfast After the Bell as a critical way to end childhood hunger in across the state.

Accessing traditional cafeteria breakfast service can be challenging for many kids. Breakfast After the Bell provides breakfast in a way that is more convenient and accessible to students, resulting in increased student participation. Research indicates that eating breakfast at school helps children improve classroom performance, attendance and promotes healthy habits.

“As kids head back to school this fall, school breakfast is as critical to their ability to learn as any other school supply,” said Kathy Saile, No Kid Hungry California state director. “No Kid Hungry California is committed to connecting students all across our state with breakfast by expanding and strengthening Breakfast After the Bell programs.”
