Breakout Session F

Expanding Access to Summer Meals: Lessons Learned from Non-Congregate Meal Programs in Rural Communities

Saturday, November 16, 2024

8:45 AM – 9:45 AM

Facilitator: Daisy Munguia, associate director

Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will understand the implementation process of non-congregate meal programs in rural areas during the summer of 2023, identify the challenges and successes faced by state agencies, sponsors, and No Kid Hungry staff during the first year of service, and apply best practices and lessons learned to improve and expand these programs in their own districts. Additionally, participants will gain insights from a panel of school district representatives who will share innovative approaches used in the 2024 non-congregate meal programs, including bulk meals, multi-day distributions, and home delivery.

Description:

Join us for an engaging session on the historic introduction of non-congregate summer meal programs in rural communities. Following Congress’s landmark decision in late 2022, innovative meal services like grab-and-go and direct home delivery were launched in the summer of 2023 to reach children who lack access to congregate meal sites. Led by No Kid Hungry, this workshop will delve into comprehensive findings from documented conversations and surveys with state agencies, sponsors, and our dedicated staff. We will explore the challenges encountered, celebrate the successes, and uncover opportunities for future expansion.

Additionally, we will feature a panel of school district representatives who implemented non-congregate meal services in 2024. These panelists will share their experiences and best practices with various models, including bulk meals, multi-day distributions, and home delivery. Participants will leave with practical insights and actionable strategies to enhance their non-congregate meal programs, ensuring more children in rural areas receive the nutritious meals they need during the summer months.
