Hunger Heroes in the Face of COVID-19: FeedMore WNY

Along with the rest of the nation, kids and families in western New York have been facing uncertainty since the pandemic began. As school buildings, stores, and restaurants have closed and opened, it’s been hard for families to deal with the lack of stability brought on by the pandemic. Through it all, FeedMore WNY has been working across the region to provide food and stability for kids and families.

To help keep kids fed in the midst of the pandemic, FeedMore is operating food programs throughout their four-county service area in western New York. Their weekend backpack program provides nutritious food for kids every Friday. Items like fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and milk put smiles on the kids’ faces while helping to reduce food insecurity in the area.

FeedMore has also continued to run many of their school pantry programs throughout the pandemic, which provide pantry and refrigerated products for students in participating schools and community colleges. While some pantries had to close due to the pandemic, others have seen a significant increase in use among students and their families. These pantries provide much-needed stability in a time when so much is constantly changing.

While the economic impacts of the pandemic will likely reverberate even after the health crisis has ended, FeedMore has been able to be flexible, serving more clients and distributing more food than ever before. Through it all, staff at FeedMore have heard an overwhelming response of gratitude and thanks from community members. At No Kid Hungry NY, we’re thankful for all FeedMore does to help feed kids and families in western New York!

These stories are mirrored in communities across New York and throughout the nation. No Kid Hungry New York is grateful to all the hunger heroes who have worked throughout the COVID-19 crisis to feed kids in their communities. Their dedication and tireless work have ensured that kids have the nutritious meals they need to grow up healthy and strong.
