No Kid Hungry California Celebrates the Signing of Senate Bill 348: A Monumental Step Towards Healthy School Meals for Kids

Sacramento, Calif. –  Today, No Kid Hungry California applauds Governor Gavin Newsom for signing SB 348, by Senator Skinner. This groundbreaking legislation ensures that children across the state have adequate time and access to free and nutritious school meals.

The legislation establishes that public school students receiving free meals through California’s new School Meals For All program will be provided adequate time and access to consume these meals. Ample research shows that kids who eat healthy and nutritiously balanced meals perform better in school and have reduced behavioral problems.

“We’ve witnessed firsthand the need for schools to provide students adequate access and time to eat nutritious meals that meet their growing needs,” said Kathy Saile, No Kid Hungry California Director. “A rich body of evidence supports the positive correlation between proper nutrition and aspects of child development, behavior, learning capability, and the establishment of lifelong healthy habits.”

“We thank Governor Newsom for his unwavering commitment to ending childhood hunger. His signature on this legislation showcases his continued prioritization of children’s health and nutrition, and we commend him for it.”
